Hymn Tune Orchestrations

The hymns listed here have been orchestrated for various festival and other services at St. James Church. They are designed for 'competent amateur' players in church or school groups.

Ordering

Scores and parts are available as listed. Where a score is ordered with parts, only those parts ordered will be included in the score. Note that scores are only supplied in conjunction with a corrisponding order for parts. Scores which run to 3 or more pages will be comb bound.

To order, please email your exact requirements. I will confirm availability and price. Music will be printed and sent off to you once payment is received.

Additional Tunes

Additional tunes will be added from time to time - if there is something you need which isn't listed here, please ask.

Subject to copyright restrictions, parts for most tunes from Hymns Ancient & Modern and New English Hymnal can be produced reasonably quickly - variations and 'last verses' may take a bit longer.

Using these orchestrations

Except in cases where the entire hymn is scored out, or where specifically marked, it is not intended that all instruments should play in all verses - music directors should use their discretion!

What you get ...

Unless otherwise stated, string parts are for Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola & Cello. Where a Double Bass part is specified, it is different from the Cello part.

'String Sets' consist of 3xV1, 3xV2, 2xVa, 2xVc, 1xDB if required.

'Wind / Brass' sets (where specified) consist of one of each part.

'Full' sets consist of a String Set (where applicable) + 1 of everything else.

There is usually no organ or vocal parts - the organist is expected to play direct from the hymn book - though most arrangements will work without organ if necessary. Likewise, singers should use the hymn book, singing in harmony or unison as appropriate.

Parts etc. are printed once your payment is received, so please allow enough time to ensure you get everything in time.

Praxis Pietatis / Lobe den Herren

'Praise to the Lord the Almighty'. Harmony as in Hymns Ancient & Modern and English Hymnal. Opens with a fanfare for brass, verses 1 & 2 standard harmony (brass tacet in verse 2). Verse 3 is a horn solo with strings playing a variation. Another short fanfare introduces verse 4 which has some variations in the brass parts.
