November 2015 News from Custom Internet

News : November 2015

This month we take a brief look at security, viruses and malware, and some of the things you can do to keep your system running smoothly.

Security has been in the news once again.  Whilst it's large companies that get the headlines, every PC user needs to be just as careful.  Here is a quick checklist ...

  1. Always use a quality firewall on your network and keep it up to date.
  2. Use different strong passwords for all your email and online accounts.
  3. Ensure that wireless networks have their security turned on.
  4. Ensure that you know who has access to your PC and protect any administrator accounts with login passwords.

The list could go on, but no two setups are alike and there is no 'one size fits all' solution. We are happy to help you improve your security to keep your PC and its users safe and secure.

We have produced a PC Security checklist, which can be downloaded from here.

Viruses and Malware

It's all stuff you don't want on your machine. Viruses can be downright dangerous and often arrive on poisoned emails or disks from elsewhere. Disks or memory sticks from someone else should always be scanned for viruses before use. Anti-virus software is something you should always have on your machine and kept fully up to date. Save the pain of corrupted or lost files. Call us if you require help or advice with your anti-virus software.

We use Kaspersky Internet Security on all our office systems and recommend it to our customers. You can purchase the latest version through our store.

Malware comes in all sorts of guises - browser toolbars and add-ons, 'useful' utilities that pop up and ask for money to turn them on, web pages redirected to advertising or adult content sites. This type of infection will often be picked up from a web site, email, or arrive on the back of something else. Clearing these infections up can be quite difficult, so do call us if you think you have a problem.

System Maintenance

Most PCs are reasonably trouble free, but there are a few things you can do to help keep it in tip-top condition.

  1. Ensure that the air vents are not obstructed, and remove accumulated dust or fluff with a soft brush.
  2. Check disk usage. Right click on the drive in Windows Explorer, select 'Properties' and check that there is more than 20% free space.  If your main disk is more than 80% full, then you need to delete some stuff or acquire additional storage. Call us to discuss your options.
  3. Perform a 'Disk Cleanup'.  This is in 'Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools'.  This will clear up any unused temporary files, the wastebasket etc.
  4. Uninstall any programs or printers that you are no longer using.

If you are at all unsure about any routine maintenance tasks, why not ask us to come and give your machine a health check.
